There are many consumers worldwide that will be shocked to hear about the fact that Hummer have made the decision to close down. There are many reasons, however, that this decision had to be made, and although fans of Hummer will be saddened to hear of its fall, there will be many more people that will be celebrating the demise of this brand.

General Motors, the company that owns Hummer, were originally intending on selling the brand, as opposed to halting production altogether. The idea was to sell Hummer to Chinese company Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machines Company. When this deal fell through, and no other buyers for the brand presented themselves, General Motors were left with no other choice but to close down Hummer, in order to save the company from bankruptcy. General Motors are no stranger to having to close down brands recently, as they have had to lose Pontiac, Saturn and are in the process of winding down Saab, also. The closure of these brands means that General Motors can concentrate on some of its more popular and prestigious brands, Cadillac being amongst these.

Not only is the fact that Hummers are known for having such poor fuel efficiency, but as mentioned above with fuel prices reaching all time highs recently, economic decisions about just how fuel efficient a new vehicle is will firmly be in the forefront of buyers minds. When it comes to fuel, not only are people fretting economically speaking, but with climate change becoming a big concern in many a motorists mind, the environmental worries that come with owning a vehicle that would contribute greatly to their carbon footprint makes Hummers less appealing to the every increasingly environmentally concerned car buyer.

Environmental worries and climate change are not solely to blame for the decline in demand for individuals, but they are also partially the reason why the sale of Hummer to Tengzhong fell through. The Chinese government had the last say in the sale, and the decision to disallow Tengzhong from buying Hummer was partially due to the environmental impact that this would have on the country. China also didn't want to place too much reliance on importing oil from other countries. Perhaps other governments could learn from this.

Hummers have always been a vehicle that has gone in and out of fashion. With their distinctive styling, it is easy to understand that some people are never going to be a fan, but with vehicles coming and going in fads the disinterest in Hummer over recent years could be put down to the fact that they are simply less coveted in their appearance. Since people want to buy a vehicle that will impress others, a Hummer is stained with the environmental stigma and certainly does not look as good as a Land Rover Discovery or Porsche Cayenne either. With some people being very passionate about climate change and carbon footprints, it is easy to understand that they may not want to be preached to about their choice in car, and do not want to cause friction between themselves and family members who are worried about the environmental impact of these vehicles.

The decision to close down production of the Hummer comes at a time when interest in new vehicles all round is at a low. Since the world recession hit, most consumers are more likely to keep the cars that they currently have in order to save their money on things like 4wd road tax increases, car insurance and additional insurance costs such as gap insurance. The inclination to try and pinch pennies also means that, where buying a new vehicle is concerned, people are more likely to purchase one which is friendlier on the pocket than a Hummer. Not only is this true in terms of the cost to buy one of these vehicles, but also to run one. Well known for being "gas guzzlers", consumers are unlikely to want to buy a vehicle for which they will incur massive monthly fuel bills. During March and April 2010 European and British motorists have seen rapidly increasing fuel prices thanks in part to Govt. fuel tax increases and a reduction in Middle East oil stock piles. Over a long period of time, the costs of running a vehicle like a Hummer no longer make sense in a world where car buyers are increasingly turning to alternative fuelled vehicles. Maintenance and fuel costs, taxes and the current economic climate, all help to play a role in the demise of the Hummer.

There are many different reasons as to why Hummer has had to be closed down by General Motors, but one thing is definite; there may well be more people celebrating this loss than mourning it.

The G-Box functions by intercepting sensor outputs, modifying them, and outputting them to the vehicle's onboard computer. The G-Box is compatible with most popular performance upgrades such as aftermarket intake and exhaust systems, low boost forced induction systems, lightened and/or underdrive pulley kits, grounding kits, and many others. The G-Box enhances performance in multiple ways. First, it modifies signals being read by the ECU, causing an adjustment to the fuel curve, which is what creates the increase in horsepower and torque, as well as improves throttle response and shift speed. When the ECU sees these modified signals it provides a different set of fuel and ignition maps than it would under factory operating conditions. A second feature of the G-Box is it's "High-Heat Signal Correction." In short, when the engine compartment heats up, some sensors that relay pertinent fuel curve contingent information to the ECU begin to lose accuracy due to heat absorption into the sensor. The ECU then reads these incorrect signals, and leans out, or otherwise incorrectly alters the fuel curve, which hampers performance. These errors cannot be corrected from within the ECU, there must be an independent unit to correct these errors. The G-Box is designed to compensate for these signal errors. Ever since the military released the Humvee design to the open market, it has been a favorite vehicle for many people. General Motors produces this amored truck turned luxury vehicle, and have recently announce a version made to run on biodiesel.

Gas-Guzzling Vehicles

The Hummer has long been a favorite target of environmentalists and conservationists worldwide because of it's famously atrocious gas mileage. The Hummer uses more fuel than 5 economy vehicles, and that means 5 times as much smog and carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas. It only makes sense to try and minimize the amount of harmful byproducts this monster vehicle produces, and biodiesel may be a big step towards a solution.

Biodiesel and Pollution

Biodiesel is a natural alternative to petroleum-based diesel and can be used in most diesel engines without any modifications needed. It is completely biodegradable and is non-toxic. However, some engines do require optimization to be able to run on 100% biodiesel. Most unmodified diesel engines will run on a mixture of petroleum and biodiesel with no problems. Bio diesel, when used alone, produces 65% less smog-causing emissions than regular diesel, and around 60% less carbon dioxide emissions. All this while maintaining the same fuel efficiency as petroleum-based diesel.

Pioneering the Alternative-Fuel Hummer

The man who made it happen is Tom Holm and the non-profit Eco-Trek Foundation. While most environmental groups bemoan the Hummer, this group decided to do something about it. Tim's alternative fuel Hummer runs on B100 (that's 100 percent biodiesel) and gets 23 miles per gallon. That means that this Hummer produces less carbon dioxide and smog than any petroleum economy vehicle, while promoting the use of the environmentally friendly alternative fuels.

Biodiesel Isn't the Only Game in Town

But there is another alternative to even a biodiesel alternative fuel Hummer: one that runs on the environmentalist's favorite fuel: hydrogen. Arnold Schwarzenegger owns this Hummer, which is not widely available yet. Hydrogen produces absolutely no emissions other than water vapor, making it by far the cleanest alternative fuel hummer available. But the availability of hydrogen is still quite limited, and for the moment it is far more expensive than biodiesel. It requires a complete engine reworking to run on pure hydrogen, and special fuel storage considerations. Biodiesel, on the other hand, is easily distributed by the same channels as petroleum products, and does not require very much, if any, engine reworking.

Environmentally Friendly and Renewable

No matter what car you drive, you should look into a biodiesel or other alternative fuel replacement. Biodiesel is a renewable resource (unlike petroleum), and is far cleaner and less hazardous than any petroleum product. These vehicles may be more expensive now, but someday you will be chuckling as you pay half what the pure petroleum users are paying. As petroleum prices rise, pressure to make the switch to alternative, cheaper fuel is as well. It is only a matter of time before alternative fuel vehicles become the norm, rather than the exception.

You sure do love the way the Hummer vehicles go through various roads and road conditions without sweating a drop. You also do love the vehicle's muscles and all the power that they have in store. You also sure do love how easy it is to find those custom Hummer parts so maintaining the vehicle would not pose to be a problem.

But one of the very things you sure do not like about the Hummer is the fact that it sure does run and use up much too much gas and fuel. Yes, Hummer vehicles are very much known for their gas guzzling ways and the effect it has on your budget. Plus, you also are unsure of how much "dirt" and pollution the vehicle can share with the environment each time a Hummer drives by you.

However, it does look like times are really changing. When the world came out trying to find ways so as to augment the huge costs that driving could bring, out came fuel efficient vehicles and hybrid vehicles. And when the world was out purchasing hybrid vehicles, General Motors (the mother company that is responsible for the Hummer brand) has decided to make sure that the Hummer fits in the fad.

There is now a greener and really cleaner version of the Hummer H3, one of the vehicles under the mentioned brand. And yes, what makes this one quite special is that from being one of the major causes of holes in the pockets and also of pollution, the H3 was now transformed into a vehicle that runs on clean and inexpensive E85 bio fuel that is based on ethanol. They call this new one the Hummer H3 FlexFuel.

As per this new one, the Hummer H3 FlexFuel comes using the regular 5.3 liter V8 engine that is also used by the regular Hummer H3. It also makes use of a four wheel drive system. The difference though is that the engine of the Hummer H3 FlexFuel has been made to be cleaner and has been made to run on E85 fuel. This one has also got an even toned down interior and exterior so as to match its current environmental friendliness.
