The Hummer’s conceptualization began in 1979. It was basically being designed for the US army and was to be built as a High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV). At that time many companies were asked to put forth their best designs for the same. Out of the many that presented their ideas, the three that were chosen were those of General Dynamics, Teledyne and AM (American Motors) General. But this was just the beginning for the companies to prove their worth. The army was very demanding in wanting a vehicle not only of high quality but also that could withstand any kind of pressures, glide through any kind of terrain, and that would be light and easy to maintain! And voila AM General was able to give the most supreme prototype and in the least possible time! Their model called the Hummvee, proved to be just what the army had commanded. It came out with flying colors in the various tests to gauge its superiority. Then the first Hummvees, that was around 55,000 of them, were given for production over a period of 5 years in 1983 to AM General. AM General won this race too and within just 6 months the Hummvee was ready for use. With time the general public too could not resist the desire to drive these Humvees. Thus AM General decided to come out with a civilian version of the Humvee called the Hummer. In December 1999 the Hummer brand and the authority to market and distribute it were sold off to General Motors by AM General. AM General however still manufactures the Hummer.

The Hummer is an SUV-a sports utility vehicle and is the rage with those who are fond of sturdy, long and rough and tough cars. The Hummer seems to have no competitor in this area. The first and original Hummer is now called the H1. It is said that the Hummer was made as a result of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s persuasion as he had seen the Humvees and was very impressed. The popularity of the Hummer is such that the US boasts of several groups and clubs of Hummer owners who come together and drive them either for recreation or for some good causes. Well why good causes, read on to find out. As the Hummer is well known for its great strength and durability, it is often employed in disaster hit areas. Such Hummer owners provide their vehicle for these purposes and thus put them to use for a noble cause. In fact a group has been formed of Hummer owners who have been trained in first aid and CPR. Thus the Hummer has spread its wings to touch all of humanity.

The most recent and a very well known Hummer model is the H3. The H1 and H2 Hummer models are known to be quite large. Unlike them, the five seater H3 has been made to cater to the sensibilities of the common who wishes to own an SUV but still wants it to not look too bulky. The H3 also has good fuel economy and is quite luxurious for the small cost it demands! It has good soundproof materials used in its windows and enough sealing to allow you to hear and speak comfortably enough. This is significant considering that the H3, like its predecessors, is prone to making noise. The H3 also has side curtain airbags as well as the normal driver and passenger ones, which provide added protection. Some of its other features include large knobs for HVAC, sunvisors that have pull out extensions, and large and very readable gauges. The other common features include a tilt-adjustable steering column, power windows and locks, remote keyless entry, an audio system with a CD player, cruise control, air conditioning, an electronic rearview mirror with temperature and compass readings, antilock brakes (ABS), traction control, a tire-pressure monitoring system, and stylish leather seats. It has an OnStar system with one-year Safe and Sound service plan. This system informs the concerned people in case of an emergency and helps them to locate you and get you immediate help and relief. It even helps to keep thieves at bay, because the system can track your Hummer in case of theft.

I'm not an off-roader but I was just curious because I drove by the Hummer dealership the other day and so no real Hummers, just the cheap SUV ones.

Hummer Oxygen Sensor: Keeping the Hummer Environment-Friendly

SUVs and trucks are some of the vehicles known to consume a lot of gas. Hummer is one of these. Based on the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) or Humvee, Hummer was first offered in the market in 1992. It is said that this large off-road vehicle was initially produced for the civilian market because of Arnold Schwarzenegger. He made this request after being impressed by a convoy of HMMWV.

To help get the most out of a full tank, using the Hummer oxygen sensor is highly recommended. It is a great tool to achieve better fuel efficiency, cleaner emissions, and enhanced engine performance. It does this by monitoring the air to fuel mixture if it is too rich or too lean. A rich mixture contains more fuel and less air, while a lean mixture has more oxygen. After the Hummer oxygen sensor determines the kind of mixture, it then sends a signal, in the form of a voltage, to the engine management computer. The computer will make modifications to the mixture until it reaches the ratio of 14:7:1.

Two types of oxygen sensors are available today, the zirconia sensor and the titania sensor. The most commonly used is the zirconia sensor, which utilizes a zirconia element to produce a voltage. On the other hand, the titania sensor uses the technology of electrical resistance to generate a voltage.

As an integral part of a vehicle, the Hummer oxygen sensor needs proper maintenance. Although it is particularly designed to be durable, however, it is still susceptible to fail. One of the main reasons for a failing oxygen sensor is the build-up of contaminants and oil ash on the sensing element. This can lead the sensor to have incorrect readings and send wrong voltage signals. In effect, the engine management computer will make inaccurate adjustments, thus causing engine damage. To avoid this from happening, an immediate replacement is advised. Some motorists instantly know that the sensor needs replacement once the “check engine” label lights up. Others watch out for signs like poor gas mileage, failed emission test, foul emission smell, and poor acceleration.

Alternative Fuel Hummer - How the Hummer Became Enviornmental Friendly

Ever since the military released the Humvee design to the open market, it has been a favorite vehicle for many people. General Motors produces this amored truck turned luxury vehicle, and have recently announce a version made to run on biodiesel.

Gas-Guzzling Vehicles

The Hummer has long been a favorite target of environmentalists and conservationists worldwide because of it's famously atrocious gas mileage. The Hummer uses more fuel than 5 economy vehicles, and that means 5 times as much smog and carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas. It only makes sense to try and minimize the amount of harmful byproducts this monster vehicle produces, and biodiesel may be a big step towards a solution.

Biodiesel and Pollution

Biodiesel is a natural alternative to petroleum-based diesel and can be used in most diesel engines without any modifications needed. It is completely biodegradable and is non-toxic. However, some engines do require optimization to be able to run on 100% biodiesel. Most unmodified diesel engines will run on a mixture of petroleum and biodiesel with no problems. Bio diesel, when used alone, produces 65% less smog-causing emissions than regular diesel, and around 60% less carbon dioxide emissions. All this while maintaining the same fuel efficiency as petroleum-based diesel.

Pioneering the Alternative-Fuel Hummer

The man who made it happen is Tom Holm and the non-profit Eco-Trek Foundation. While most environmental groups bemoan the Hummer, this group decided to do something about it. Tim's alternative fuel Hummer runs on B100 (that's 100 percent biodiesel) and gets 23 miles per gallon. That means that this Hummer produces less carbon dioxide and smog than any petroleum economy vehicle, while promoting the use of the environmentally friendly alternative fuels.

Biodiesel Isn't the Only Game in Town

But there is another alternative to even a biodiesel alternative fuel Hummer: one that runs on the environmentalist's favorite fuel: hydrogen. Arnold Schwarzenegger owns this Hummer, which is not widely available yet. Hydrogen produces absolutely no emissions other than water vapor, making it by far the cleanest alternative fuel hummer available. But the availability of hydrogen is still quite limited, and for the moment it is far more expensive than biodiesel. It requires a complete engine reworking to run on pure hydrogen, and special fuel storage considerations. Biodiesel, on the other hand, is easily distributed by the same channels as petroleum products, and does not require very much, if any, engine reworking.

Environmentally Friendly and Renewable

No matter what car you drive, you should look into a biodiesel or other alternative fuel replacement. Biodiesel is a renewable resource (unlike petroleum), and is far cleaner and less hazardous than any petroleum product. These vehicles may be more expensive now, but someday you will be chuckling as you pay half what the pure petroleum users are paying. As petroleum prices rise, pressure to make the switch to alternative, cheaper fuel is as well. It is only a matter of time before alternative fuel vehicles become the norm, rather than the exception.
