This is PRACTICE? It’s excellent!
Doesn’t look to me like you need any practice. Nice capture!
wow, love the colors you captured of the under belly ! I went out there again this AM however the lighting was even worse, this is a fantastic shot !!
Great job JC. These look great!
Well done, very fine detail. I had high hopes for tons of hummingbird shots this summer, but it’s NOT easy. Do you know what kind this is?
These are nice John…
(I’m happy when my friends shoot photos of these little birds, too!)
do you mind me talking shop about your photo & general approach to photo these birds? (I might have a tip or two… maybe you can critique my moose or deer photos; or any you like!)
OK- so, you’re using the D200 w/ 70-300 VR lens at 300mm w/ ISO 640; F/5.6; 1/1000 sec.
I think you are onto it correctly. got to open aperture up & crank ISO up to have as high a shutter speed possible to "freeze these little birds". Also, you got to know where they’re headed (feeder, flower, etc)…
got to have a lot of light (catch 22).
got to be ready (my problem!) … try to acclimate you & birds to each other. spend time by feeder, flowers, etc. (I work in garden where they have their "jungle gym") . the lens/camera combo you have works well. meaning you can hold onto it w/o getting too heavy. take a break; miss a shot. that’s life. can also put on tripod (I use monopod w/ 80-200 f/2.8 Nikkor- it’s heavier. then you have to decide whether to manual focus or AF. I grab the MF ring on the 70-300 & tweak as I hold shutter release 1/2 down as I chase birds in the viewer. i use both "single" & "continuous" shot.
enough of my ramblings.
shoot more hummer photos, my friend. these are nice.

Very good first attempts jc, I should be so skilled. I took a few at chuck’s feeder and didn’t see a wing. I could use a lot more practice as well.

These birds are fast..you did very well to capture as well as you did. The positioning of the wing when it ‘froze’ is good too.
outstanding capture
perfect timing
Seen on your photo stream. (?)
Great catch!
Aloha. Great photo…
